Anna Adelheid's parents' names were on both of
her marriage records, the first at St. Vincent de Paul parish and the second at Sts Peter
and Paul parish. Much of the remaining information was taken from Carol Holterhaus'
WorldConnect database. Anna's almost-exact birthdate, place of birth as Hannover and her
father's name were known from her obit which also gave the name of her husband and the
date of their marriage in St. Louis. The approximate year of her emigration was known also
from the obit which stated she had emigrated at age 14. From that she and her family were
identified on the passenger list of the ship Mata. The records of Werlte parish
were searched simply because of the occurance of the name Abeln in that part of Emsland
and her baptismal record was found there. The mother's surname was given as Lehe on the
baptismal records of Anna Adelheid and her siblings but as Hermes on their marriage
records. The mother had been born to Joseph Lee and Anna Hermes so the later switching of
of her surname may have had something to do with property ownership. more about sources used |

Henry's year of birth was known from his age
on censuses and it was known that his wife had been baptized in Meppen parish. A baptism
record for Henry, however, was not found in that parish even though their marriage had
taken place there. An entry was eventually found for Henry on an Abeln website (url above)
which gave his exact date and place of birth which was then verified in the Gross Hesepe
parish records. The baptismal record for the child born in 1854 was at St. Joseph parish,
for the children born 1856-67 at St. Ferdinand, and for the child born in 1870 at Sacred

an entry for this emigrant was identified by his parents' names and on it a date and place
of birth were given. These parents also had a daughter named Maria Helena born in 1810.
Meppen parish records were checked and a corresponding entry was found there for Herman
Engelbrink. No US document has been found yet for Herman which gives his age so there is
some possibility that there may have been another child named Herman Engelbert born to the
same couple but none was listed for them on the website mentioned above. So far, Herman
Engelbert and his wife have not been found on record after their marriage in 1850. more about sources used |

Maria Annas month
and year of birth were known from the 1900 census. Because
her second husband was from Soegel and Abelns were known
to have lived in that parish, Soegel parish records were
checked and a corresponding birth/baptism entry was found
there for Maria Anna. Her parents names as noted above
were from that document. Maria Anna's first husbands
surname was known from the record of her second marriage.
Her year of emigration was from censuses.

Maria Catharine was a witness in April of 1846
at the marriage of her sister Tecla to Anton Tonjes. She died a few months later. |
| SOURCES: |
Maria Catharine's parents' names were not on
her death record at St Vincent de Paul parish but her age was. Several of her siblings who
were also living in the same part of St. Louis at that same time had already been
identified and Maria Catharine was easily recognized as their sister from her age on the
passenger list of the ship Mata. The parish records of Werlte were checked
because of the occurance of the name Abeln there and a baptismal entry was found in that
parish's records for Maria Catharine. The mother's surname was given as Lehe on the
baptismal records of Maria Catharine and her siblings but as Hermes on their marriage
records. The mother had been born to Joseph Lee and Anna Hermes so the later switching of
of her surname may have had something to do with property ownership. more about sources used |
