was known from his age (43) at death noted on his record
at St Boniface parish. Because his son was known to have
been born in Waldhoeve, Soegel, that parish's records
were checked first for a marriage record which noted his
age and parents' names. Soegel parish records were checked
again and a corresponding birth/bapt record was found
there for him also. His parents' names as stated above

posted a RootsWeb query concerning this emigrant |
| SOURCES: |
Herman's date and place of birth and parents'
names were noted in a RootsWeb query posted by Jack Sowar.
Meppen parish records were checked and a corresponding
birth/bapt entry was found there for Johan Herman Bernard,
1 year earlier than the query date and in Streitfeld rather
than Fullen, but both located in Meppen parish. Information
about wife and death were from the query.

Bernard Herman's
approximate year of birth was known from his age on the
1880 census and the date (incorrectly as May 24, 1847) on
his tombstone. Anna/Maria Johann Backers and Jacob Kolb,
husband of Anna Maria Backers, were godparents for his children
and Bernard Herman was marriage witness for Maria Helena
Backers and Johan Gerhard Stegeman. Bernard Herman and the
3 presumed siblings corresponded to the children of Bernhard
Backers and Anna Pollman found in the book listing Twist
emigrants. Twist parish records were checked and a corresponding
entry found there for Bernard Herman. Baptisms for the two
oldest children were found at St Francis Xavier parish in
Taos.

Backers and his wife were godparents for children of this
Prenger couple and Bernard's parents were thought to have
been Bernard Backers and Anna Pollman of Nieuw Schoonebeek.
The same couple had a daughter Maria born in 1845, corresponding
in age to Maria Johanna (Anna J Prenger) on the 1880 census.
Twist parish records were checked and a corresponding entry
found there for Maria Johanna. Maria Johanna was married
at St Francis Xavier parish and her children (at least through
1874) were baptized at the same parish. Their godparents
included the two other Backers-Pollman chidlren - Anna Maria
Backers, married to Jacob Kolb, and Helena Backers, married
to Stegeman. Maria Johanna's death was recorded at St Peter

Lizzie 4, Wm 2, Gd 4/12, Henry 9, all born MO
THOMAS, Bernard 69, Elis 70, both born Hannover |
| SOURCES: |
This ID is not 100% certain
but seems likely because several siblings of Johan Bernard
born in 1832 settled in St Louis
Bernard's approximate year of birth was known from his
age on the passenger list of the ship Magdalena,
his age (41) at death and his age on censuses. Because
other Baumeyers of the same generation in St Louis had
come from Gross Berssen, the parish records fo Klein Berssen
were checked and a corresponding birth/bapt entry was
found there for Johan Bernard, brother of Baumeyers living
in St Louis. His marriage was at Sts Peter and Paul Parish.

Johan Theodore's
parents' names were not on his marriage record at Sts Peter
and Paul parish but his age was known from the 1860 census
which also stated he was from Hannover. A corresponding
entry was found on an emigrant list in the book Berssen
- ein Dorf im Emsland which gave Johan Theodore's exact
date of birth, his parents' names and stated he emigrated
in March 1857. With that an entry was found for him on the
passenger list of the ship Ocean. The Gross Berssen
identification is supported by the fact that his sister
Anna Angela was also found in that book and that he was
a witness at her marriage in 1860 to Johan Gerhard Eilers.
His child born in 1861 is known from the child's MO death
certificate.
