Death/memorial card collection of the German-American
communities of southern Mercer County, Ohio : a compilation
of data from death/memorial cards in the Mercer County Historical
Museum
This collection of death/memorial cards represents a significant
number of late nineteenth and twentieth century residents
of southern Mercer County, especially in the region of the
villages of St. Henry and Maria Stein. The cards are cultural
artifacts of the region in that they are representative
of the German-Catholic culture of Mercer County and are
testaments to the art of design and printing. The early
cards were written in German, have numerous depictions of
sacred images, and contain various prayers to be recited
for the deceased. These cards also contain genealogical
data including birthplaces and surviving family members
