Johan Bernard's death record at St. Boniface
parish gave his age at death (73) and said he had been born in Herzlake. The birthdate of
May 1, 1832 was on his tombstone. A listing was found for Johan Bernard (just a day
earlier) on Dr. Stefan Remme' website Zur Geschichte von Dohren im Emsland. The
marriage information was from the same website. Children's names were taken from the Johan
Bernard's will. more about

Johan Gerhard's parents' names and his age
(27) were on his marriage record in 1852. They were also listed in Dave Halm's World
Connect database. Their child was known to have been born in Klein Dohren so that parish's
records were checked and a corresponding entry found there for Johan Gerhard. Johan
Gerhard's tombstone says he was born Jul 18, 1827 but that would not have been possible
because a brother was born in January 1828. more about sources used

death. Her parents' names were on her marriage record
at St Joseph parish. No document was found listing Catharine's
place of birth but she was a witness at a marriage between
two persons from Boerger parish so that parish's records
were checked and a corresponding birth/bapt entry was
found there for her.

Regarding the possible first marriage to
Helena KESSEN, the groom's name on her marriage record was listed as Johan Herman DUETHMAN
with parents Herman DUETHMAN and Angela LUEGER, but the only children born to that couple
to survive infancy were the 5 siblings who emigrated together (none named Johan Herman.)
It is also possible that Johan Wilhelm was Helena's husband. He too died in 1847. |

Gerhard's age (42) and his parents' names were
known from his marriage record in 1866 at Sts. Peter and Paul parish. His age of 32
on the passenger list, found on the FTM index to the Germans to America series for
the ship Cesar Godeffrey, was incorrect and should have been 23. (Gerhard's
parents, who were married in Nov 1813, did not have a child named Gerhard born in or near
1814.) Because the passenger list said he came from Ahlen, a village in Steinbild parish,
that parish's records were checked and a baptismal entry for Gerhard Herman was found
there which indicated he had been born in Beckhusen, a part of the community (Gemeinde)
of Ahlen. The names of the children and of the wife named Tecla were taken from the 1860
census. more about sources

married (see note below) |
| NOTE: |
It is possible
that Johan Wilhelm was the Johan Herman who married Helena
KESSEN Jun 2, 1846, at St. Vincent de Paul. Or the groom
may have been Joh Wm's brother Gerhard Herman. The groom's
name was listed as Johan Herman DUETHMAN with parents Herman
DUETHMAN and Angela LUEGER, but the only children born to
that coupld to survive infancy were the 5 siblings who emigrated
together (none named Johan Herman.) Helena died Dec 27,
1847. |
| SOURCES: |
Johan Wilhelm's
parents' names were not on his death record at St. Vincent
de Paul parish, probably the only record for him in America.
His age, however, was given on that document and it corresponded
with the the age for Wilh on the passenger list of the ship
Cesar Godeffrey. Steinbild parish records were checked
and a baptismal entry for Johan Wilhelm was found which
indicated he had been born in Beckhusen, a part of the community
(Gemeinde) of Ahlen.

Wilhelm's year of birth was known from
the 1900 census. His parents were named on his marriage
record at Sacred Heart parish. Because his parents were
known to have been residents of Lorup, that parish's records
were checked and a corresponding birth/bapt entry was
found there for him one month later than indicated on
the 1900 census.
