of birth, his wife's name and the names of two of their
children were known from the 1870 census. That information
allowed entries for them to be identified in the online
Emsbueren Familien-Datenbank which gave Bernard's
birth information, parents' names, marriage info, children's
birth information and year of emigration to the US.

This ID is not 100% certain
but seems probable.
Gerhard Bernard's approximate year of birth was known
from his age on a census. His parents' names were not
on his marriage record but someone with his name and corresponding
age was found in the emigration index, emigrating from
Meppen in 1838. With that information, Meppen parish records
were checked and a corresponding birth/baptism record
was found there for Gerhard Bernard. The parents' names
as noted above were taken from that record.

Johan's date of birth and
parents' names were noted on David Eilering's genealogy
website. That source also said he came from Lingen but
a birth/bapt record was not found there for him there.
Because his surname was known to have occurred in Gross
Hesepe parish, that parish's records were then checked
and a birth/bapt entry was found there for Johan Herman
one day earlier than the date noted by David Eilering
and with the correct parents. Information about his
death and his children was from the same website. The
marriages were both at St Boniface parish.

Herman Bernard's
approximate year of birth was known from his age on his
death record at St Vincent de Paul parish. With that he
was identified in the Osnabrueck emigration index and then
on the passenger list of the ship Mata. With that
information a baptismal record was found for him in the
Klein Berssen parish records and his parents' names were
taken from that record. His wife's surname was known from
the marriage record of son Johan Bernard who married in
1852, St. Louis, MO, at St. Joseph parish and is also mentioned
in Herman Bernard's entry in Lynne Brown's WorldConnect
database. The first two children were identified from the
parents' names on their marriage records and the last three
were known from the passenger list and are also in Lynn
Brown's WorldConnect database.
