death. A corresponding brief entry was found for him in
Walter Tenfelde's book Auswanderungen und Auswanderer
aus dem ehemaligen Kreise Lingen nach Nordamerika. Besides
birth year (1818) and place (Hestrup/Handrup) the entry
also said that he emigrated in 1844 to Germantown, Clinton
County, IL. An exact birthdate and parents' names were taken
from his baptismal listing in the Lengerich parish records.
His wife's surname was known from the baptismal records
of their 2 sons at St Boniface parish.

the tombstone. His parents' names were taken from that record.
Johan William's wife's name and the year he arrived in Illinois
were entered in the tables at the end of the book History
of Marion and Clinton Counties. The children's names
were from the 1870 census.
