Johan Gerhard's family was identified
on the passenger list of the ship Orion and most
of them have entries in Walter Tenfelde's book Auswanderungen
und Auswanderer aus dem ehemaligen Kreise Lingen nach
Nordamerika which supplies birth information for each
of them. The 1840 census indicates that the father and
probably 3 of the 6 children died between arrival in 1836
and 1840. Johan Gerhard can be identified as one of the
survivors from various later censuses.

John B's date of birth was known from
his cemetery listing. His year of emigration was noted
on the 1900 census which allowed him to be identified
on the passenger list of the ship Republic
where he was traveling with Elisabeth, already identified
as born in Vinnen, Holte. So Holte parish records
were checked and a corresponding birth/bapt entry
was found there for Johan Bernard with parents the
same as those of Elisabeth. John B's entry on the
cemetery list also gave the name of his wife and his
daughter Catharine's's death was noted also.

a corresponding birth/bapt entry was found there for
him one year earlier than the death record birthdate.
