Herman Bernard's date of birth was known from
his tombstone. A corresponding entry was found for him in Walter Tenfelde's book Auswanderungen
und Auswanderer aus dem ehemaligen Kreise Lingen nach Nordamerika which gave his date
and place of birth, parents' names, date of death, his wife's name and year of emigration
(as 1858 which can't be right.) Marriage date and children's information were from Connie

Johan Bernard |
| BORN: |
Aug 18, 1823, Leschede (parish in Emsbueren) |
| PARENTS: |
Johan Theodor SCHULTE RICHTERING
Susanna Maria TRUESSEL (also called KOLK) |
| EMIGRATION: |
1838 - arrived New Orleans Jan 10, 1838 on the
ship Cumberland
Bernard RICHTERING 14, from Schepsberg (Schepsdorf) to MO (listed with the KNUEVEN/HILLEN
family who settled in Westphalia, MO) |
| MARRIED: |
unknown * |
|
*Johan Bernard Richater(ing) had been previously
listed as having Maria Tellman as his wife but now it seems clear that Maria's
husband was Bernard H Richter born Oct 27, 1820, in Prussia rather than Hannover. |
| NOTES: |
1839 Father Helias Census
Bernardus RICHTERING, famulus, 19
listed with Theodorus KOLKS and wife Maria Catharine |
|
Bernard RICHTERING was godfather for a child
of Theodor KOLKS and Maria Catharine KOESTERS (born in Lohne) in 1841 at St Joseph parish
in Westphalia. This may be the last documented presence of Bernard in MO. |
| SOURCES: |
This ID is not 100% certain because no US
document has been found with Johan Bernard's parents' names nor his exact date of birth.
Nevertheless, it is thought to be a correct ID because in 1839 he was living with Theodore
Kolks who was probably the uncle of Johan Bernard born 1823 in Leschede.
Johan Bernard's approximate year of birth was known from his age on US censuses and his
age on the passenger list of the ship Cumberland. The passenger list indicated he
had been living in Lohne, Schepsdorf when he emigrated so that parish's records were
checked but no corresponding baptismal entry was found for him there. There was an entry
for someone with his name in Walter Tenfelde's book Auswanderungen und Auswanderer aus
dem ehemaligen Kreise Lingen nach Nordamerika which had the date and place of birth
and parents' names given above. The online Emsbueren Datenbank was also checked and
the same birth information was found there for Johan Bernard RICHTERING also call KOLK. more about sources used |
