Anna Maria's husband's name
was known from the baptism record of their child born
1853 at St Joseph parish. With that information, the family
was identified on the passenger list of the ship Edmund
in 1851 and entries for all of them were found in Walter
Tenfelde's book Auswanderungen und Auswanderer aus
dem ehemaligen Kreise Lingen nach Nordamerika. Anna
Maria's entry included year and place of birth and parents'
names. Bawinkel parish records were checked and a corresponding
entry was found there for Anna Maria.

It is presumed that the
same Benedict Schmees was the husband of both of the
women named above. The first marriage was at St Joseph
parish but parents were not named on the record. That
wife's death record was at St Vincent de Paul parish
where their children had been baptized and where the
second marriage took place. Benedict's parents' names
were on that record but there was no mention of a pervious
marriage. Benedict's approximate year of birth and probable
place of brith were known from the 1860 census. Soegel
parish records were checked and a corresponding birth/bapt
entry was found there for Benedict.

Caroline's age and parents' names were
known from the 1880 census. That allowed an entry for
her to be identified on the Passe list of emigrants
from Wettrup and in Walter Tenfelde's book Auswanderungen
und Auswanderer aus dem ehemaligen Kreise Lingen nach
Nordamerika which gave exact birth information, year
of emigration and her husband's name. Information about
the children was taken from the 1900 census.

Bernard's parents'
names were not on his marriage record at Sts Peter and Paul
but his approximate year of birth was known from his age
on the 1860 census. With that he was identified in WorldConnect
database 16914, a source which supplied his date and place
of birth and parents' names. That information was then verified
in Soegel parish records. The same database gave his date
and place of death. A search of the online Catholic St.
Louis cemetery listings revealed that he was buried in Sts
Peter and Paul Cemetery in the same lot with his two brothers
Johan Bernard and Wilhelm and their families. Information
about the child was taken from the 1860 census.
