Herman's decade of birth was known from the 1840 census.
Presumed siblings, Herman, Tecla, Maria and Mathias (who
also settled in Cole County) were known to have been born
in Aschendorf so that parish's records were checked and
a corresponding birth/bapt entry was found there also
for Herman. His parents' names as noted above were taken
from that record and confirmed that the presumed siblings
mentioned above were in fact his real siblings.
