Books - misc.

No attempt will be made here to include all books written about locations in Emsland or about locations in the American Mid-West where Emslanders settled. Mentioned below are only books which have been helpful for this project, especially those which were the source of some information about an emigrant listed on this website. Books which contain Missouri and Illinois records can be found under MO and IL records and other resources.

Emsland

Auswanderungsliste fuer die Fruehere Pfarrgemeinde Twist in den Jahren 1838 - 1910 nach Amerika, published by the Gemeinde Twist.
This book devotes one page to each emigrating family, supplying valuable birth information for each individual and names of parents, grandparents, and in some cases, great-grandparents.

Bechtluft, Horst H, 200 Jahre Moorkolonien Twist, 1786-1986, Ein Lesebuch and den Anfaengen, compiled by Horst H. Bechtluft, published by Gemeinde Twist, 1986.

The chapter entitled Twister Auswanderung nach USA - Neuanfang in der Neuen Welt by Horst H Bechtluft and Hermann Levelink has a list of families which emigrated from St. George parish in Twist to America and gives the names of both emigrating parents, how many children they had and the year of emigration.

Behnen, Elisabeth et al., Berssen - Ein Dorf im Emsland - Orts- und Kirchenchronik, published by the Gemeinden Gross Berssen and Klein Berssen, 2000.

This book contains a very useful list of emigrants from Gross and Klein Berssen. Those listed were born in one of those villages and they registered their intent to emigrate with the parish. Entries for the years 1842 to 1873 contain date and place of birth, parents' names and year of emigration. Earlier and later entries have less information.

Tandecki, Norbert and Reinhard Cloppenburg, Status Animarum, 1749 - see details under Emsland Church Records, Status Animarum.

Tenfelde, Walter, Auswanderungen und Auswanderer aus dem ehemaligen Kreise Lingen nach Nordamerika, publ: Heimatverein Lingen (Ems), Lingen 1998, ISBN: 3-9800064-6-8.

A book listing emigrants from the former Kreise Lingen - an excellent resource for this project!
See above section, Emsland - Civil Records, for more details.

Illinois - Clinton County

McDonough, Brink and Co, History of Marion and Clinton Counties, Illinois; Philadelphia, Corresponding Office, Edwardsville, IL, 1881
Especially helpful were the tables at the end of this book which listed some residents of the various townships with their place of origin, year of arrival in Illinois and often the wife's name.

Aviston Centennial, Aviston, IL, 1964, 100 Years and Progress, the Aviston Centennial Historical Committee, Clinton County, IL, 1964

Brueggemann, Hilda, History of Germantown Township, self-published Clinton County, IL, no year.

Marxkors, Dr. Heintz, compiler, Emigrants from the area of the former County of Meppen, part of the former Dukedom of Arenberg-Meppen, part of the Kingdom of Hannover, emigrated to St. Libory, St. Claire County, IL, USA, Bielefeld, 2000

Marxkors, Dr. Heintz, compiler, Emigrants from the area of the former County of Hummling part of the former Dukedom of Arenberg-Meppen part of the former Kingdom of Hannover, emigrated to St. Libory, St. Clair County, IL, USA, Bielefeld, 2000

All 3 of Dr. Marxkors' books contain quite a bit of detail about the emigrants listed (always date and place of birth and parents' names, usually marriage information and children's information, sometimes death information and emigration information.) They are available at the St. Louis County Library Headquarters on Lindbergh Blvd in the St. Clair County section R977-389.

Missouri - Cole and Osage Counties

Gentges, Margaret H, Immigrants to Osage County, Missouri and their Immigrant Ships, self-published, Osage County, MO, 1995

Both books by Margaret H Gentges also contain information on some Emslanders who settled in adjacent Cole County. These books are on the shelves of the St. Louis County Library Headquarters on Lindbergh Blvd in the Osage County section R977.858.

History of St. Francis Xavier Church, Taos, Missouri, Illustrated 1838-1988, St. Francis Xavier Sesquicentennial Committee, Taos, Cole County, MO, Library of Congress No. 88-061208

Hoer, Cletus - books listing births, marriages and deaths in and around Westphalia, Osage County, IL - see Osage County, MO records.
