Bernard's date of birth and
parents' names were on his MO death certificate (which
had his place of birth incorrectly as IL - an error which
began with the 1900 census and carried thorugh in 1910
and 1920.) That information allowed an entry for his family
to be identified on the passenger list of the ship Leocadia
which provided a probable place of birth. Werlte parish
records were checked and a corresponding birth/bapt entry
was found there for Johan Bernard, one year later than
the year indicated by the death certificate.

both events recorded at St. Joseph's parish. A corresponding brief entry was found for him
in Walter Tenfelde's book Auswanderungen und Auswanderer aus dem ehemaligen Kreise
Lingen nach Nordamerika which indicated he was born in 1821 in Wettrup and emigrated
in 1845 to St. Louis. His baptism entry was found in the parish records of Lengerich which
supplied his parents' names. The child born in 1845 was baptized at St. Joseph. more about sources used |
