Bernard's date of birth was on his MO
death certificate. His probable place of birth was known
from the 1852 Waldhoefe census and from presumed brother
Rudolph for whom Bernard was a marriage witness. Soegel
parish records were checked and a corresponding birth/bapt
entry was found there for Bernard exactly one year later
than the death certificate birthdate. His parents' names,
as noted above, were from that document and were the same
as Rudolph's. His wife's surname was known from her death
certificate and that of their daughter Catharine's.

census noted her month and year of birth. Because several
siblings were known to have been born in Lathen parish,
